Happy New Year 2009!

We celebrated the New Year 2009 with the obligatory black-eyed peas, cornbread and collard greens, but added some delicious pork BBQ and BBQ sauce from Slope's.

I also made some cole slaw, deviled eggs, a pear and kiwi fruit salad, and some star-shaped sugar cookies with green sprinkles for dessert. All quite yummy!

Here are Daddy and Matt waiting at the table for everyone else to get served.

Here are the fruit salad and sugar cookies, and be sure to notice how I color-coordinated them with green and white.

And there's Daddy too!

It's Getting Cold Around Here, So It's Time for the Dogs To Don Their Sweaters!

Sophie had never worn a sweater before, but she easily appreciated the warmth it provided. And all the dogs love to dress up in their sweaters - they know they are so cute!

My First (and Only) Attempt to Make Swedish 'Negerbollar'

'Negerbollar,' literally, 'negro balls,' are a popular Swedish snack for children. It requires no cooking, and contains a mixture of oats, sugar, coffee, cocoa and butter, shaped into balls and rolled in sugar sprinkles.

Nowadays 'negerbollar' are called 'chokladboll,' for all the obvious reasons.

Anyway, this simple recipe turned out horribly for me. The result was so disappointing, I had to throw out the whole batch after sampling a few balls and snapping a photo. Made my stomoach hurt.

Matt's Perfect Apple Pie - Secret Ingredient = Grains of Paradise!

Matt made an apple pie for all of us to enjoy, and it was delicious. The perfect apple pie with the perfect crust, the perfect filling of 3 kinds of apples, and seasoned with grains of paradise. We had never even heard of grains of paradise until Matt ordered a bag on the internet. Delicious!

That black ceramic bird thing in the center of the pie is for steam venting. We'd never seen those in action either. Worked great!

And here is the pie/tart after serving - just look at those juicy apples!

And now on the plates, ready to eat and enjoy!

Daddy, Sophie and I Hit the Trails for Sophie's First Hike with Jerry!

These photos are from our hike at the Big Tree Nature Preserve in Roswell, Georgia. It is Sophie's first encounter with Daddy, as well as her first hike on this trail.

We have only had Sophie a few months, and she is still uncertain as to whether she will come back to our home and her new family, or whether, as in her past, someone else will appear on the scence and take her to another home. Consequently, she is cordial to Daddy and the people we meet on the trail, but also a bit anxious. You can see these emotions in her face in the photos below.

Here is Daddy leading the way on the trail with his hiking stick in one hand and our lunch from Taco Bell in the other.

Daddy and Sophie get acquainted as we stop for a little rest.

Sophie loves to jump up on these benches. You can see her blind eye in these photos. She is uncertain about where this hike is leading.

Best Ever Popovers!

Matt bought the special popover pan and made a delicious batch of homemade popovers. So good! If you have never had popovers hot from the oven, you are missing out on one of life's pleasures. Hot, crusty on the outside, soft on the inside, with pockets where you can add butter and your choice of fruit preserves or jams.

Below are photos showing the popover pan, the popovers right after they come out of the oven, and a split popover to show the inside where you put the butter and strawberry preserves.

I'll find the recipe and post it soon.
